The People's Friend...

I will forever think of Grandma whenever I see a copy of The People's Friend. I don't know how many years she subscribed to it, but there always seemed to be a copy laying somewhere at her house whenever we visited.

This memory only came to me in the past week or so, as we as a family waited on bittersweet tenterhooks for my dear grandma to relinquish her hold on this life and go on to be at peace and indefinite happiness with those who went before her. The People's Friend was, and is, written with a more mature audience in mind, but on the inner back page of every issue there was always a cartoon strip featuring the same characters. I cannot for the life of me recall what these characters were called, or indeed were meant to be, but I remember that from one week to the next, the stories never seemed to have a sequential order, nor make much sense.

What I remember too, however, is how my Grandma would save them up and post them down to me like a little envelope of love and thoughtfulness. That was her - always thinking of others. She was such a special lady, and I think the more I celebrate and mourn her, the more I come to learn how much.

Rest in peace, Grandma. Xx
